"Arlene Hynes, 1962"
Oil on Wood
14" x 14", framed

I was the mother of 10 children living in Arlington, VA when I received a letter from the Arlington School District, telling me to be prepared in case of a National Disaster. My husband was working for Senator Eugene McCarthy at the time and rumors of trouble with the Soviet Union did enter private conversations, but my first thought was, “What will I do?  How can I get my children from three different schools? We have one car that Emerson drives. This was four days before President Kennedy appeared on the television to tell us we were in the midst of a crisis.”
